Long Term Plans

I know some people might not want a join a board that will disappear tomorrow, and so I'll put this up front:

I have already paid for two years of hosting and domain service. I want "The Moons of Vega" to be a fun place for anyone who joins, a place where you can just speak. Granted, speech rules do apply, for example Nazis are not welcome, but there are so few places for leftists to go and just talk about things that bother them. Major corporations have been pushing back, even on somewhat better platforms like Bluesky.

Facebook, Twitter/X, and other sites are just so geared towards maintaining the status quo and corporate power structure, that you can't really speak up about anything that might cause issues with payment processors, advertisers, and so on. Well, I don't have advertisers, I don't want advertisers. I have no plans for advertisers ever.

Anyhoo, there's Mastodon but it feels so disconnected because it's federated, which works for resiliency but doesn't do much for connectivity.

Then there's the good old forum. A software concept that's been around for decades, all the way back to the BBS days when you still had to dial up to get on the internet (some people still do!). It's a tried and true, tested format, where a community builds itself based upon the people themselves rather than a brand.

I want this place to be a human crafted island in a sea of "AI" slop, where you don't have to worry about algorithms and companies pushing bullshit on you. There are plenty of forums across the internet, some of them have millions of members, we're not them. This is a small board currently being administrated by me. Just me.

I do plan on having mods should we get large enough, and those mods will come from the community not as overlords, but as friends who have the power to push back against people trying to hurt one another.

Sound idealistic? Maybe. The internet is full of cynicism, but I'm no wide eyed naive person. I'm aware of the dangers out there, but it is truly my sincere hope that there are people who want to come here and just talk, to have conversations, debates if you want them, have a little thrill, be yourself, have fun. If not a palace of the mind, then at least a comfortable pillow for the soul. You dig?

So with that being said, my plans for this board is long term. I want it to be around for many years, and if a community grows from it, how wonderful! If it just ends up being me, okay. I'll keep posting here in order to take the pain off of my own heart about the life I have to deal with every day.

You are invited to do the same.

With much love and respect,
Red.
